III EU-CELAC Summit 2023

The third EU-CELAC Summit of Heads of State and Government was held in Brussels on 17-18 July 2023. It was a historic occasion to bring together European, Latin American and Caribbean leaders to renew and strengthen relations between the two regions after almost a decade of absence of bi-regional dialogue at the highest political level. The summit was held under the theme "Renewing the bi-regional partnership to strengthen peace and sustainable development".

In preparation for the third EU-CELAC Summit, the EU-LAC International Foundation organised different thematic EU-LAC Fora, which aim to bring together relevant societal actors, policy-makers and institutions to discuss challenges and opportunities for the EU-LAC strategic partnership. With this series of initiatives, the EU-LAC Foundation strives to advance a multi-faceted dialogue on the potential of a reinvigorated bi-regional relationship.

"The summit is an opportunity to renew the strategic partnership after eight years of not having this kind of meeting. In the face of new global scenarios, it provides a space for deliberation, exchange of ideas and consensus building on common interests between the leaders of both regions."

"This summit is taking place in a key year for EU-CELAC relations. It has been almost 10 years since we held a summit. We are sending a powerful political signal to the world and showing our desire for greater coordination between the European and Ibero-American spaces, which will allow us to mutually reinforce each other in the world in which we live."

"The upcoming CELAC-EU Summit has the potential to contribute leadership, and more, to addressing these intractable global challenges which impact all our 60 countries in the CELAC-EU nexus, and to tackle our own specific troubling concerns. The world is watching us; so, too, emphatically are the peoples in our America and Europe. We must not disappoint them."
