Birmingham’s Black History Month launches this week

Published: Wednesday, 23rd September 2020

Birmingham’s celebration of Black History Month will be launched with a special virtual event on Saturday (26 September).

As well as reflecting the city’s diversity and heritage, this year’s programme also reflects on the Black Lives Matter movement and the impact Covid-19 has had on Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities.

While this year’s launch will be digital it will still feature inspiring speakers and creative performances, with many drawing on their and the wider community’s experience of the pandemic.

The free-to-view event will be streamed on Black Story Partnership’s YouTube channel, the Birmingham (UK) Black History Facebook page, and the Birmingham Black History Month website - www.birminghamblackhistorymonth.co.uk/launch - from 7pm on Saturday, 26 September.

Birmingham’s Black heritage and its citizens’ own stories will also raise awareness of the challenges and the perceptions that have restricted their access to opportunities, progress and participation in our society.

Details of events, activities and exhibitions taking place during October for Black History Month, found in the Birmingham Black History Month website from Friday 25 September. For more information, please visit: www.birminghamblackhistorymonth.co.uk
