How the heck do you paint white flowers?! The answer is in my new video featuring Altenew Paint-A-Flower: Daffodil. This 4×6 stamp set is especially sweet as there are two flower arrangements!

How the heck do you paint white flowers?!

Altenew Paint-A-Flower: Daffodil

Daffodils are surely one of the cheeriest flowers. Often they’re one of the first signs of Spring, symbolizing new beginnings. Altenew delights us with two daffodil arrangements in this small but mighty Paint-A-Flower: Daffodil 4×6 stamp set.

While these images are ideal for coloring with your favorite mediums, they can be used as-is and heat embossed for a variety of looks.

Paint White Flowers | Watercolor Paint-A-Flower: Daffodil

Although I don’t pre-plan card designs one thing I do before coloring flowers is to choose a reference photo. Now, I wasn’t expecting to find a variety of daffodils and was pleasantly surprised to find white and pink ones. These were totally new to me!

How the heck do you paint white flowers?

I was so inspired by these charming blooms I jumped right in without considering how I was going to pull off white watercolor. It’s funny that white gouache didn’t enter my mind until now. I only thought about the shadows.

No line watercolor is a must for white flowers. So, I stamped the images in Frosty Pink Crisp Dye Ink three times without masking. The images overlapped, however, this can’t be seen in the final card.

My Altenew Artists’ Watercolor 24 Pan Set is getting a proper workout in my craft room. It’s become the watercolor set I reach for again and again.

Pink Petals | Red Cosmos & Tea Party
White Petals | Rock Collection
Yellow Centers | Pocketful of Sunshine & Fall Harvest
Leaves | Green Meadows & Rain Forest

After all the elements were painted (as shown above), I had to figure out how to separate the white flowers from the background. The most obvious choices are to color the background or watercolor a drop shadow behind the flowers.

paint white flowers, watercolor white flowers

Well, I wasn’t confident that I could pull that off successfully with my current watercolor skills. So, I opted to shade with a pencil and tortillon. I definitely have greater control over this medium and after all, any mistakes can be erased!

Pencil shading is added to the right bottom edge of the blooms, between the flowers, and to add stamens. Voila, it’s a pretty simple hack. What do you think?

Artist Marker Daffodils

Now I know not everyone watercolors, so I colored up another card with Altenew Artist Markers too. Variety is the spice of life and all that.

Copic color Paint-A-Flower: Daffodil

This time yellow needed to make an appearance, but I couldn’t give up the lovely pink centers! When I first started cardmaking, I hardly ever used yellow, but it’s totally grown on me.

For this card, I stamped the image with Altenew Permanent Black Ink (alcohol safe ink) and colored with the following Artist Markers.

Yellow Petals | Buttercream & Warm Sunshine
Pink Petals | Blush, Rouge, Crimson
Teal Petals | Mountain Mist, Frayed Leaf, & Volcano Lake
Leaves | Frayed Leaf
