The Cayman Islands has a population of 69,656, according to preliminary results of the 2021 census.

Compared to the last census in 2010, which recorded 55,456 residents, Cayman’s population has grown by 14,200 or 25.6%.

Deputy Premier Chris Saunders provided the figure during government’s press briefing on Thursday.

The population number is below the 71,106 estimate used by government to calculate, for example, local vaccination rates.

However, Saunders noted that there were 958 homes “that we did not get to”. If these homes were included, considering an average of 2.4 people per household, the number would be much higher than the 69,656, he said.

The Economics and Statistics Office clarified to the Cayman Compass that 69,656 is the verified population figure. Of the 958 homes not yet counted, 549 refused to participate and 409 were not present during the census. More information is still being collected from these households.

Also not included in the official population figures, but recorded during the census, were 2,350 temporary, short-term residents, who do not live in the Cayman Islands for more than six months in a year.

These include mainly foreign property owners but also for instance workers on short-term work permits.

Even though they are not included in the official population figure, Saunders said, they are taken into consideration for the islands’ infrastructure developments.

The full census report will be released in June, but more information will be reported as it becomes available, he added.
