Did you see last weekend’s #SolarStorm light up the sky? ☀️ Well, the ESA/NASA #SOHO spacecraft saw it first... and it looks like a...blizzard? ❄️🤔 Stationed 1.5 million kilometres away from Earth, SOHO constantly watches the Sun, returning spectacular pictures and data of the storms that rage across its surface. About us
The European Space Agency (ESA) is Europe’s gateway to space. Its mission is to shape the development of Europe’s space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world. ESA is an international organisation with 22 Member States. By coordinating the financial and intellectual resources of its members, it can undertake programmes and activities far beyond the scope of any single European country. ESA's 22 Member States are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Slovenia, Slovakia, Latvia and Lithuania are Associate Members. Canada takes part in some projects under a cooperation agreement. Five other EU states have Cooperation Agreements with ESA: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Malta.

🔎 Lenticular dust in detail 🤔 📷 This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image shows a breathtaking view of the galaxy NGC 4753 and its complex dust structures. This galaxy is a lenticular galaxy, meaning it has an elliptical shape and ill-defined spiral arms. Residing around 60 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Virgo, it is now believed that most of the mass in the galaxy lies in a slightly flattened spherical halo of dark matter! 👻 Ghostly reflections in space! The Hubble Space Telescope has caught the eerie, wispy tendrils of a dark interstellar cloud being destroyed by the passage of one of the brightest stars in the Pleiades star cluster, Merope. Like a flashlight beam shining off the wall of a cave, the star is reflecting light off the surface of pitch black clouds of cold gas laced with dust. These are called reflection nebulae. 🌌 👉https://lnkd.in/eyjKeZpD Credits: NASA/ESA and The Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA), George Herbig and Theodore Simon (University of Hawaii). #PickyourPic 📸 🛰 Mars Express, launched in 2003, is Europe’s first mission to the Red Planet. It carries eight instruments and deployed a lander, Beagle 2. The lander was lost during its attempt to reach the planet’s surface but the orbiter continues its highly successful on-going global investigation of Mars and its two moons, Phobos and Deimos. The mission is to study the martian atmosphere and climate, the planet’s structure, its mineralogy and its geology, and to search for traces of water. https://lnkd.in/e_bBwtH5 #FunFact The #MarsExpress orbiter also deployed the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding (MARSIS) instrument, which used microwave pulses to search for radar signatures of subsurface water. MARSIS found evidence of liquid water on Mars in a possible underground lake beneath the south polar cap. 👏 https://lnkd.in/e2_YArr8 ❤️ https://lnkd.in/eBHaM-cq 👍 https://lnkd.in/eypZiXNX 💡 https://lnkd.in/eVx_CS4N Astrium SAS of Toulouse, France, was the prime contractor for Mars Express, leading a consortium of 24 companies from 15 European countries and the US.

🛰️Mission control ready for #EarthCARE! ⏰ Teams at ESA’s European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany, are currently engaged in intensive preparations for the critical ‘Launch and Early Orbit’ phase of the agency's EarthCARE satellite. The core of any launch preparations at ESA is the ‘simulations campaign’. By rehearsing the time-critical operations that take place on and around launch day, the campaign trains the spacecraft’s flight control team together with support teams from flight dynamics, ground systems and software support as well as teams from the satellite’s manufacturer and instrument teams into a single cohesive unit. 🚀 👉https://lnkd.in/eB4B_7ug The Earth Cloud Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) satellite mission will shed new light on the role that clouds and aerosols play in regulating Earth’s climate. 🌍👉https://lnkd.in/ex-z4yKq

📷 What do you see in this picture? 🤔 The stunning, fantasy-like landscape of the Carina Nebula is, in reality, sculpted by the action of outflowing winds and scorching ultraviolet radiation from the monster stars that inhabit this inferno. 🔥 In the process, these stars are shredding the surrounding material that is the last vestige of the giant cloud from which the stars were born. 👉https://lnkd.in/e4cbG9Ut Credits: NASA, ESA, N.
