๐ Letโs see what insights we could get at our last โ๐๐๐ฏ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฑ ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ๐บ๐ผ๐ฝ๐น๐ฎ๐๐๐ถ๐ฐ ๐๐ผ๐บ๐ฝ๐ผ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐โ Workgroup Meeting Our colleague Jan Petersen started with a presentation about Benchmarking of automotive door trim concepts using local fibre reinforced thermoplastic natural fibre composites followed by Alexander Peitz who presented us the investigation of the forming process of a bio-based fibre metal laminate (FML) Ramona Sitohang visited us from Enschede where University of Twente is located. She briefed us with the effect of fibre waviness of UD outer layers in quasi-isotropic laminates on compression strength which was measured as function of waviness angle, and could reduce the strength about a factor two. Martin Rudolph, gave us insights about how Svismold has developed fins for a surf board, made by overmoulding two layers of UD tape with a core of injection moulded material. TECNALIA Research & Innovation got represented by Ricardo Mezzacasa, who showed us A hybrid thermoplastic composite body-in-white part which was made by a tape stacking a flat blank, which is then consolidated, and in next step thermoformed into a 3D shape in a diaphragm forming press. Dr. Ulrich Morschel joned us from Textechno Herbert Stein GmbH & Co. KG . First of all we got a short introduction into their Tapetest, which is a new tape quality testing device and can test the quality of a complete roll of UD tape, on aspects such as width, thickness, roughness, foreign objects, fuzz, loos fibres, and even damage inside the tape. After that Textechno gave us the possibility for a demonstration in der AZL Halls. The next speaker Kai Schlรถgel from TEER Institute Aachen gave us an overview on different options for thermal recycling of carbon fibre composites. Brightlands Materials Center got represented by Ali Rezaei, who presented that BMC took back both UD tape production waste and actual automotive parts and developed a process to make injection moulding pellets from it, called RELFT that have similar performance as regular PP-glass LFT materials. Ferrie van Hattum showed us their work from ThermoPlastic composites Application Center (TPAC) on various designs to recycle thermoplastic waste material into new products that actually fly on aircraft. They also working with PCR PP and bio-based materials, anticipating upcoming EU end of live directives. We thank all speakers for the interesting insights and the valuable discussions with all our participants. Curious in this kind of topic? Then save the date for our next โHybrid Thermoplastic Compositesโ Workgroup Meeting ๐ ๐๐๐ป๐ฒ ๐ญ๐๐, ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฏ The whole AZL Team is already looking forward to meet you again next year and get in touch with you at any time. #composites #technology #sustainability

๐ Get to know the AZL Partner Institutes @ the RWTH Aachen Campus! Todayโs edition โ Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT With over 480 employees and more than 40 spin-offs, the Fraunhofer ILT in Aachen is one of the leading contract research and development institutes in its field. For more than 35 years, the Fraunhofer ILT experts have been developing and optimizing laser beam sources and laser processes for production and metrology, energy and mobility, medical and environmental technology, as well as quantum technology. As the ILT mentions: โLightweight components are composed of different materials for reasons of cost and stability. The characteristics of the materials are exploited specific to their load-bearing capacity. To join these materials, a technology is required that connects dissimilar materials securely in short process times. Assistance is provided by a joining process which utilizes high-speed laser micro structuring to furnish the metal surface with undercut structures. In the subsequent laser-based joining process, the polymer is melted selectively on the joint between the metal and polymer, such that the latter can cramp on the metal surface processed before. Thanks to a load-optimized dimension of the direction, form and number of structures, a large bandwidth of possible hybrid connecting structures for a multitude of material combinations results. In combination with mechanical separation, laser processing enables recycling options for a sustainable use of materials and a complete separation by type.โ โป Wanna learn more about the Fraunhofer ILT? ๐ Get to know the AZL Partner Institutes @ the RWTH Aachen Campus! Todayโs edition โ Welding and Joining Institute (ISF) The joining of various components is necessary in almost every product development but often receives little attention. The ISF is celebrating it's 75th anniversary this year and has been focusing on the various fields of expertise in welding technology, as well as the broad world of adhesive bonding technology. As the ISF mentions: โAs an efficient and widely applicable joining technology, adhesive bonding is becoming increasingly important in product development. In particular, the joining of multi-material structures is a unique selling point that enables innovative material selection and promotes lightweight construction potential.โ Here are some focus topics of the Instituteโs work: โ Various surface pre-treatment methods using laser and plasma processes in order to identify material and load-specific solutions for structural bonds and to understand the mechanisms of action โ Entire adhesive bonding process chain from design and adhesive selection, application and dosing to experimental validation โ Experimental and analytical characterization of adhesives and bonded samples - specific application limits of adhesives can be determined analytically or bonded components can be mechanically tested at specified application temperatures or after ageing under defined load conditions Wanna learn more about the ISF? AZL partner Cevotecs new approach for the production of H2 tanks! Cevotec has developed an industrial solution to reduce carbon fiber usage for a composite tank by locally reinforcing the tankโs dome areas. Using the industrial Fiber Patch Placement (FPP) technology, the dome reinforcements are applied directly onto the liner using a fully automated which can be combined with established wet or towpreg winding equipment. According to Cevotec this approach can not only achieve 15% net fiber reduction but also increase the storage efficiency by 17%, resulting in: โ weight reduction โ material reduction โ improved CO2 footprint while maintaining equivalent mechanical properties. โน๏ธ Click on the link in the comments, to read more about the technology in the AZL newsLIGHT #23 #Innovation #Sustainability #CompositeTechnology โ Follow this to never miss: #AZLNewsLight
