EUIPO - European Union Intellectual Property Office’s Post

It's Eurovision day 🎤! Did you know that intellectual property plays a big role in protecting and promoting Eurovision’s brand and reputation? Here are some facts about trade marks related to the song contest: 💙 The Eurovision trade mark itself is a collective mark, owned by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). 🎻 The opening song, ‘Prelude’, is registered as a sound mark at the EUIPO. It was created in the late 1600s by a French Baroque composer, supposedly to celebrate French victory in a battle. In 1954 the score was rediscovered and adopted as the Eurovision theme. 👩🎤👨🎤 The names and logos of some former Eurovision winners such as Måneskin, Conchita Wurst or Lordi are also registered at the EUIPO. I tried to make an AI painting of the moment when the Finnish representative Käärijä (or Kaarija in English) wins the Eurovision Song Contest. I failed. Mr Kaarija's clothes were impossible to explain to the AI. They just don't exist. I began to wonder about copyright issues with the many iterations of this work. I am also familiar with failure from my art classes at school. In the traditional way of failure, copyright is clear, and in this modern failure, the world is full of different opinions. By the way, how many songs in the competition are actually made by an AI? No one knows the answer to that... P.S. I like the work I created, but it doesn't really capture the essence of Kaarija. Maybe it's the Hulk.

Engaging historic overview of the Eurovision song and trademark! Further to your overview, the following information may be of interest to fellow music history enthusiasts: The Eurovision music is derived from the first of the six original motets, composed by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, with the title ‘Prelude, marche en rondeau’, and is believed to have been performed in 1692 to celebrate the French victory at the Battle of Steenkerque. The Eurovision version was arranged by Guy Lambert, a 20th-century French organist. For anyone interested in registering a trademark: https://lnkd.in/dcxYnrii
