Yesterday I was in Brussels to discuss with Cities Today how to better balance public sustainable mobility objectives with private mobility operators’ business needs. Amongst other ideas we also discussed the concept of microsubsidies as a new instrument in Local Authorities‘ policy toolsets. Microsubsidies are by definition: ☸️ objective oriented ✅ data driven 🎯 targeted 🤝discrimination-free I shared the pilot results from our participation in the #Molière project, a Horizon2020 project funded by EUSPA - EU Agency for the Space Programme. Use case 1 had the title „Micro-incentives for micromobility“ 1️⃣ Over 12 weeks this summer we provided discounted 🛴& 🚲 rides in low-income areas, underserved by public transport in Brussels. 2️⃣ We were able to validate our hypothesis that small micro-incentives such as 30/70% discount has a positive effect on the ride uplift (+2.6%), compared to control zones and historical demand. 3️⃣ We can quantify the incentive costs per ride of such measure (0.96€) and compare it with other possible measures, ex adding new bus lines, increasing frequency of public transport, etc. 4️⃣ through MDS or other data shared by micromobility operators, Cities or Public Transport Authorities can measure the impact of such micro-incentive programs and decide if the outcomes are positively contributing to their SUMP objectives 5️⃣ If yes, certain policy outcomes could be subsidised through defined micro-subsidy programs in the future to create a more cost efficient, integrated sustainable mobility system. Together with our city partners we explored a few different use cases based on OECD - OCDE‘s new publication „Measuring New Mobility“ available here: https://lnkd.in/evcjBWFq We concluded that there is something in it and it’s worth to explore some use cases further. I am looking forward for a continuous exchange of thoughts and possible trials of microsubsidies in some of our partner cities. Full project report of the Micro-incentive pilot in Brussels will be available soon. Josep Laborda Eglantina Dani Pedro Homem de Gouveia Karen Vancluysen Lidia Signor philippe crist

Private microfunding helped a lot in the Balkans to persuede the authorities there was a strong demand for subsidizing micromobility in less frequented parts of the cities

It's really great to see ideas like this being tested out and with positive results! Would love to see the detailed report when it comes out. Great work moving micromobility forward as usual, Sebastian Schlebusch!

Very interesting! Congrats; microsubsidies would be a great opportunity to push the industry forward, and open up opportunity to scale funding for bike sharing as public transport!
