Vol. XXXIV. France M. Dolinar, Reports of the Bishops of Ljubljana to Rome on the Conditions in the Diocese (Relationes ad limina). Part Two: 1685-1943, Ljubljana 2012, 423 pp.
This volume publishes reports of the Bishops of Ljubljana to Rome on the conditions in the Ljubljana Diocese from 1685 do 1943. The relations were written in accordance with the instructions from the Council Congregation which also examined their contents. Following the reform of Roman Curia, the competence for this was transmitted to Consistorial Congregation which issued a detailed instruction in 1918 on how these relations ought to be constructed. In the given period the Ljubljana Diocese was ruled by 17 bishops who sent 35 reports to Rome. Despite their schematic form and prescribed questionnaire, these reports are immensely interesting. They offer a rather faithful insight into spiritual and material conditions in the Diocese, and, above all, unveil the judging ability of each individual bishop reporting on the actual state in the Diocese. This is all the more significant in the light of facts and assessments available in other sources pertaining to that time.
