@ISNEducation Nuances in Nephrology Webinar: Parenthood with advanced kidney disease or transplantation

Becoming a parent is hugely important to many patients with kidney disease. The risks of being pregnant to the mother and the baby are increased the worse the BP, the eGFR and the proteinuria and by some diseases in particular. Our job is to advise and support and assist with joint decision-making based on the evidence available. The decision to go ahead does have to be modified globally according to resources available e.g. dialysis / neonatal ICU.

Despite advanced kidney disease, many patients can achieve successful parenthood.  We need to overcome the barriers and anxieties that prevent patients (men and women) from thinking this is possible and to recognise the very practical difficulties they may face once parents.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understanding the importance of parenthood to patients (men and women, cis or trans) with kidney disease
  2. How to facilitate safer pregnancies
  3. Understanding the barriers to achieving parenthood – it’s more than just the medical issues
